Why an overactive mind doesn’t create a better life?

Two weeks ago we talked about how you already belong. That you don't need to find the right dance moves or earn your way into connection with the divine—it's already there, always has been. You don't need a guru, priest, or best-selling book to unlock your birthright. You’re already home.

So... why does it still feel so hard? Why are you still anxious, overthinking, feeling like you're carrying everything alone?

Here's what's happening:

Your mind is running the show. And your mind is GREAT at its job—thinking, strategizing, problem-solving. But here's the thing: it was never meant to be captain.

Think of yourself—the being you are—as a team. You've got:

  • Your mind (the strategist)

  • Your heart (emotional wisdom)

  • Your body (intuition and energy)

  • Your consciousness (the YOU that's aware even when you're not thinking)

Those of us raised in Western society typically identify SO strongly with our thoughts that we don't even recognize the rest of the team exists. We think we ARE our mind. So when the mind doesn't have an answer (and it often doesn't), we just... spin. Overthink. Panic. Try harder to THINK our way out.

Ultimately, logic and analysis only answers some of life's questions, and then what do you do?

do you recognise this feeling?

The mind is a terrible captain

because it can't see the whole picture

It doesn't have access to:

  • What your heart knows about who's safe to trust

  • What your body knows about what drains or energises you

  • What your consciousness knows about your connection to something larger

What changes when consciousness becomes captain?

You—the awareness that's been here the whole time—start taking input from the WHOLE team. Not just the loudest voice (your mind), but all of them. You're able to integrate all the different perspectives, emotions, and ideas you have at once, creating one cohesive experience.

Your body says "I'm tired." Your heart says "this person doesn't feel safe." Your mind says "but logically they should be fine!" And you, as captain, get to weigh all of that and make a conscious decision. In my experience, my body and heart know what's up.

As you practice meditation, as you learn to listen to your body and heart, they become incredible diagnostic tools. You stop spinning in mental loops because you can ask: "Heart, what do you know? Body, what are you telling me?" And you can listen in, inviting whatever it is that your brain was moving too fast to notice.

Your Mind Needs to Step Back

It needs to learn that being the strategy officer is actually a BETTER (and more satisfying) role than trying to be captain, navigator, and entire crew all at once.

Often the mind has a hard time doing this because we're deep in survival mode—we don't realize we're actually okay and have time to slow down and listen to ourselves. Being able to do that requires learning, on a nervous system level, that you're safe, which is where somatic work comes in. As that safety develops, it's your consciousness's job to set boundaries with your mind—to retrain it to do exactly the right amount of work, and no more.

This isn't about killing your ego or transcending your mind. It's about right relationship. About everyone on the team knowing their role and trusting the others to do theirs.

Next Time You're Stuck Overthinking

Stop. Breathe.

Ask yourself: "Who else is on my team? What do they know that my mind doesn't?"

You might be surprised what you hear when you finally give them permission to speak.

How can you express what your mind or heart knows that you'd normally ignore?
